This essay raises a challenging and often uncomfortable question about the scope of the gospel—whether Christianity is meant to remain a private conviction or to shape the whole of human life, culture, and community from the inside out. What stands out is the tension between the church as a visible, embodied presence and Christianity as a transforming influence that reaches beyond individual belief into art, politics, and daily life, pressing the claim that nothing truly human lies outside Christ’s concern. Whether one agrees fully with Nevin’s conclusions or not, it invites reflection on how faith moves from doctrine into lived reality. If reflections like this on faith, culture, love, and the search for wholeness resonate with you, all three parts of Eternal Love are now available here: https://theeternalnowmm.substack.com/p/eternal-love?r=71z4jh

The current church catholic is a divided people. We make claims such as “I am of Paul,” (Lutheran) and “I of Apollos,” (Reformed) and “I of Cephas,” (Roman Catholic) and “I of Christ.” (Greek Orthodox and Non-denominational.)

“Has Christ been divided?”

— 1 Corinthians 1:13

It appears that Christ has been divided. And yet, could He be simply making something new out of something old by tearing Christendom in half in order to make a “new day” for us? That seems to be His pattern. When I meditate on the ancient liturgies of the church which the Holy Spirit has handed down to us, I think I see where the “tear” in the garment is visible. It is in the area of the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Lord tore the garment, and half of the Liturgy was given to the Protestants (emphasizing the primacy of the Word above all else), and the other half was given to the Catholics (including Greek Orthodox) which emphasize the Sacraments above all else.

What will the “new day” look like for the church catholic? When the declarative Word is joined back to the “signs”……. Hmmmm…. I feel revival in the air.
